From Partner to Management Succession Specialist
My 45-year journey in professional services began as a Chartered Accountant in the Big 4, then mid-tier firms, before building my own practice into a three-partner firm. I later became a partner in a mid-tier firm before transitioning to what I do today – helping professional services firms develop the strategic leaders they need to scale.
Three Phases That Inform My Work
My career evolved through three phases that directly inform how I help firms today:
Understanding the Numbers – As a chartered accountant, I mastered financial drivers of business performance. But numbers tell you what happened, not what to do next.
Improving Performance Through Strategy – This led me to strategic planning and helping businesses develop strategies to improve results.
Engaging People in Change – I discovered even brilliant strategies fail without the right conversations to bring them to life. This led me to study Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and earn a Graduate Certificate.
Today, I focus on the latter two phases – helping firms develop strategic leadership and implement change through better conversations.
Why “Profitable Conversations”?
Years ago, a client asked: “If you could change one thing in all the businesses you’ve worked with, what would it be?”
My immediate response: “I would change the conversations.”
Conversations are the most powerful lever for improving business performance because…
- Nothing gets done without them – strategic planning, implementation, problem-solving are all just different types of conversations.
- They are key determinants of relationships, morale, and culture.
- They’re where the leadership rubber hits the road.
- Yet because conversations are ubiquitous, their impact is often overlooked.
The critical question: How many of your daily conversations are profitable? How many build productive relationships that drive your business toward its goals?
My Specialisation Today
I help professional services firms develop management succession capabilities. While others focus on ownership succession (who buys the shares), I develop the leaders who can run your business after transition.
Having been a partner myself, I understand your unique pressures. I don’t bring pre-packaged solutions – I help you discover what you already know needs to happen through conversations that matter.
My Personal Mission
Empowering people to be the best version of themselves. I don’t fix broken firms – I unlock potential in good people who are stuck thinking like technicians instead of leading like owners.
Beyond Work
I’m a Rotarian using my vocational skills to help organisations give back to community.
My wife and I have five adult children – three running their own businesses, one in corporate management, one a Victoria Police detective – and eleven grandchildren.
Family drives everything. I enjoy staying fit, AFL footy (go Hawks!), and continuous learning. The desire to improve in every aspect of life remains my key source of energy – both personally and in helping others do the same.
